Training and Coaching
Little Athletics is a fundamental skills development program designed to progress a participant’s skills and experience over time. Balance, coordination and technique are taught at an early age to enhance development and the participant’s enjoyment of the sport. Research shows that when a child can perform the skill correctly, both their enjoyment and achievement levels increase.
At Box Hill Little Athletics we are committed to progressing an athlete’s development using age appropriate training techniques and programs that will help bring out the athlete’s potential. We provide three distinct programs designed to help young athletes develop.
Mid Week Training
Wednesday Coaching program
- 4.30pm @ Box Hill Athletics Track – Hagenauer reserve
- Arrive before 4.30 ready for the group warm up session!
Our training is focused on skill development for all BHLAC participants. For the young and inexperienced it’s about mastering fundamental movements, that later become the basis for good technique. While for the older and more experienced Little Athlete, it’s a chance to refine techniques that will lead to improved performance during competition. Our program and coaching team is led by head Coach, Stephen Cain. Steve is one of Australia’s leading Decathletes, having represented Australia at Commonwealth Games. As well as being an accomplished athlete, Steve is a level 4 IAAF Coach under the Athletics Coach Accreditation Framework. Steve works with our coaching team to develop and implement programs that engage our young athletes through fun yet challenging athletic programs. Our post-Christmas program will focus on working with athletes 8+ to help them prepare for upcoming regional and state events.
Event Area Coaching during Competition
Each Sunday when competition is held at Hagenauer Reserve, the Centre will allocate ‘event specialists’ to assist both athletes and parents. Focus will include:
- Providing guidance to new parents and participants on running the event along with answering any technical questions, and
- Provide basic guidance to athletes looking to improve technique.
Other Development Programs
A range of additional programs and development resources exist for athletes and parents. These include:
- Private or squad based coaching (for athletes between 9-15yrs)
- Crystal Creek Coaching Camp
- Junior Development Squad, ‘JDS’ (run by LAVic)
- Parent courses focussed on; Introduction to coaching, Starters and Officials training.
Box Hill Little Athletics will reimburse the fee for these courses to any parents willing to use their coaching skills and contribute to our coaching program.
