It was a warm and sunny day at Hagenauer Reserve yesterday. A full program of hurdles on the back straight and 100m & 200m sprints on the front kept officials, parents and athletes busy. With one week to go before we have a break for Christmas & New Year it is almost time to celebrate what has been a brilliant first half of the season at Box Hill Little Athletics Centre. We have welcomed a number of new families to BHLAC this season. With our membership numbers exceeding our previous years figure we are on track to reach numbers that we haven't seen for quite a few years. We look forward to the last week of the year this coming Sunday. We hope to have a very special visit from Santa along with a BBQ Sausage Sizzle to end the day. Thank you to all the parents this year for your support. Without all of you doing your bit we would not be thriving as a club. The atmosphere has been sensational and we can tell all the kids are really enjoying their Sundays and the athletics. Have a great week and see you next Sunday! For the first time in 2 years we offered a Competition walks program to start off the day. It was really pleasing to see so many turn out to complete the walks event. At distances between 700m through to 1,500m it definitely gave a number of athletes a solid warm up before the main program commenced. With today's program mainly consisting of sprints on the front straight we included a trial of running the 400m program as a laned event. Something we have not done for many years. To put it simply, it takes a lot more effort and time to run the event this way. We normally get an entire age group completed in one heat when we start them off the single line but it is important for the kids to be comfortable running in their own lane, given they will compete like this at Regional & State Carnivals. Besides an unfortunate IT timing delay at the start of the day, the program ran extremely well and should be a permanent feature moving forward following a post meet review with the Committee. The Committee also unveiled the new Electronic Timing Board which was positioned above the timing tent. It was fantastic to see it make its debut and was really well received by the athletes and spectators. The timing board is courtesy of a Sports Grant BHLAC received late last season. A special thank you to Peter Stefanos who is a well known member of our Seniors club. Peter has worked tirelessly in the background to get this ready and the Committee would like to thank Peter for his assistance with this new permanent feature at the track. With two weeks to go before the Xmas breakup we have the busiest two programs coming up. Next week is Program B (hurdles focus) and then a busy last week on the 19th December. We will be holding a BBQ on the last day of the year and also are hoping for a very special visit from Santa in the afternoon as well. Thank you to all the parents that assisted today and also for your patience while we sorted out the technical issue. It is great to have such amazing support. Enjoy your week!!
