The BHLAC Committee extends a warm welcome to you all and wishes you a safe and prosperous 2022. It was great to be back at the track yesterday for the first week after the Christmas & New Year period. It was a busy week for our athletes over the weekend. Approximately 30 athletes competed at Ringwood LAC for the Four Pillars Multi event. This is an event where our athletes compete against 3 other clubs Nunawading, Doncaster & Ringwood in an exclusive multi competition consisting of 5 individual events. (sprint, hurdles, circular race and 2 field events) It is a great lead up for the State Multi Event on the 29/30 January at Lakeside. We had a number of podium finishes across most age groups so well done to everyone that competed. Yesterday's program was hot. It was a very sunny day and with the temperature hitting the 30 degree mark it tested everyone. Even the timing gates were feeling it as we had some technical issues prior to the 400m heats. The change to the 400m heats has been a good test for the club. For many years we have run them off the staggered line. Whilst this speeds up the program, it is not the way they should be run. The event in its correct way is a laned event and it is very important for our athletes (no matter what age) to not only get the experience of running this race the right way but to also help them prepare for regional and state carnivals as they are run this way at these events. Whilst the program ran a little longer yesterday the general consensus is that the majority is happy with the change. We will endeavor to keep making changes if we feel they will add to the experience for our members. We also encourage feedback and ideas from you, the parents. If you have any suggestions that you feel would benefit the club please let one of our Committee members know and we can discuss at the next Committee meeting. We have 5 more meets before the end of the season which concludes on the 6th March. A reminder to all parents that we have no Little Athletics on weekends that clash with a regional or state carnival. Please click the link below to view our latest season calendar. This Sundays program is Program B. Season Calendar Have a great week and see you next Sunday! Vale Westly Windsor (BHLAC Life Membership 1993)Westly Windsor arrived at Hagenauer Reserve in the late-1980’s with his then children Matthew & Elizabeth. ‘Wes’ quickly became a central figure at the Box Hill Little Athletics Centre, initially as the Training Coordinator and soon after as Club President – a position he held for 7 years during the 1990s. If you were a member of the club in the 1990s – you knew Wes, his welcoming face and his polite friendly English accent. His greatest passion was coaching junior athletes and he continued to help many young athletes of varying standards transition from Little Athletics to the senior club well into the 2000s. He devoted most of his time to a stable of middle and long distance athletes and there would have been few Victorian teams in the 1990s and 2000s without a protégé of Wes’ toeing the start line. He was himself a passionate runner (Melbourne Marathon Spartan) and more recently a cyclist - spending his Australian winters scaling Tour De France and Giro D’Italia climbs just for fun. The club extends it condolences to wife Elaine, Matthew & Elizabeth and thanks Wes for his outstanding contribution to BHLAC over many years. Post New Year Membership offerWith just under half a season to go BHLAC is offering any new member the opportunity to join for only $99. This membership also includes the winter Cross Country Season for 2022. Please tell your friends or family especially if they are considering Little Athletics for the first time. Traditionally we shift the training program in the New Year towards the older kids (Under 9 and up) that are preparing for regional and state events. The other reason for this is that the younger age groups generally drop off training after the New Year break. We will continue to offer training for all age groups this week and will re-access this based on the turn out of athletes this Wednesday. To assist Steve Cain and his team please click on the link below to register for this weeks training session by Midday this Wednesday. Our club Secretary Rajinder Atwol has been an amazing asset to BHLAC however it is time for her to hand over the reins to someone new. We are looking for a new Club Secretary to take over from Rajinder. This role primarily prepares the club in the new season for affiliation and is the connection between the club and Little Athletics Victoria. If you would like to help our club and you and feel you would be able to assist please contact Rajinder directly to the club email at [email protected] We are also looking for a Cross Country Team Manager for the upcoming season. If you have children that will be competing in the Cross Country Season this year we would greatly appreciate you nominating to be the Team Manager. There is not too much involved and would have the support of the Committee. If you would like to know more about this role please contact our Club President Dean Williams on 0417346382 or email him at [email protected] Thank you to our Sponsors This year BHLAC is very fortunate to have three major sponsors support the club. Smile to Go Dentistry, Robinson Gill Lawyers & Lexus of Blackburn have all committed to our club for this upcoming season. Their financial support will enable us to invest into more equipment and assist with improvements that will ultimately improve the experience for all BHLAC members, If your family needs dental work, legal advice or perhaps a new car, we would love you to consider and support our club partners.
